-बाक

Linking an Action to a Noun with -बाक

Level 3Sounds Like bāka

-बाक joins an action to a noun, the way "of doing" joins in English.

How It Works

Add -बाक where English would say "of" or "to" after a noun like time, wish or chance.

VerbWith -बाकMeaning
पढ़बपढ़बाक समयtime to study
जाएबजेबाक इच्छाthe wish to go
देखबदेखबाक मोनthe feeling of wanting to see
करबकरबाक मौकाa chance to do

Typical nouns: समय (time), इच्छा (wish), मोन (mind, desire), मौका (chance), काज (work).

This ending is the same -क that joins nouns, as in घरक. It is written joined to the verb, so पढ़बाक is one word.

-बाक also forms the longer phrase -बाक लेल (in order to), taught in its own entry.

Hindi says पढ़ने का. Maithili says पढ़बाक.
