Putting the Object First

Level 4Sounds Like predmet pred glagolot so udvoǰuvan̂e

Put a known object first to make it the topic, and repeat it with a short pronoun: Книгата ја купив вчера. (I bought the book yesterday.)

How It Works

The pattern. Known object + short pronoun + verb.

  • Книгата ја купив вчера. (I bought the book yesterday.)
  • Филмот го гледавме минатата недела. (We watched the film last week.)
  • Парите ги потрошив за храна. (I spent the money on food.)

Why the pronoun stays. A definite object is doubled anyway (see doubling a definite object). When the object moves to the front, its short pronoun stays right before the verb. It matches the object: го for masculine or neuter, ја for feminine, ги for plural.

To-someone objects. A person after на keeps its to-someone pronoun: На Марија ѝ се јавив утрово. (I called Marija this morning.) На децата им купив сладолед. (I bought the children ice cream.) See indirect objects with на.

Who does what. The short pronoun tells you which noun is the object, even when the subject comes after the verb: in Мачката ја каса кучето, ја points back to мачката, so the dog is biting the cat. See the verb before the subject.

With не and ќе. The usual order before the verb still applies: Книгата не ја прочитав. (I didn't read the book.) Писмото ќе го пратам утре. (I will send the letter tomorrow.)

Known topic or new focus. A known thing moved forward is doubled. A new or contrasting indefinite object said with extra stress is not: ЧАЈ сакам, не кафе. A definite object keeps its short pronoun even when it is stressed: МАРКО го видов. See focus before the verb.

Examples (6)

  1. Книгата ја купив вчера.

    I bought the book yesterday.

Word by Word: Book-the it I-bought yesterday.

  2. На Марија ѝ се јавив утрово.

    I called Marija this morning.

Word by Word: To Marija to-her self I-called this-morning.

  3. Филмот го гледавме минатата недела.

We watched the film last week.

Word by Word: Film-the it we-watched last-the week.

  4. Парите ги потрошив за храна.

I spent the money on food.

Word by Word: Money-the them I-spent for food.

Пари is plural in Macedonian, so the pronoun is ги.

  5. Марко го познавам од училиште.

    I know Marko from school.

Word by Word: Marko him I-know from school.

  6. Мачката ја каса кучето.

The dog is biting the cat.

Word by Word: Cat-the it bites dog-the.

Ја is feminine and points to мачката, so the cat is the one being bitten.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out the short pronoun.

    Книгата купив вчера.
    Книгата ја купив вчера.

A known object at the front still needs its short pronoun before the verb.

  • Choosing a pronoun that does not match the object.

    Филмот ја гледавме минатата недела.
    Филмот го гледавме минатата недела.

Филм is masculine, so its pronoun is го. Ја is for feminine nouns such as книгата.

  • Dropping the to-someone pronoun.

    На Марија се јавив утрово.
На Марија ѝ се јавив утрово.

A person after на is doubled with ми, ти, му, ѝ, ни, ви or им before the verb.
