Saying than

Level 2Sounds Like od; otkolku vo sporedba

Than is од before a noun or pronoun: Ана е повисока од мене. Before anything longer, such as a verb phrase, use отколку: Повеќе сакам да читам отколку да гледам телевизија.

How It Works

After a comparative (see по-; нај-), Macedonian has two words for than.

Од + noun or pronoun. This is the everyday choice when you compare two people or things:

  • Возот е побрз од автобусот. — The train is faster than the bus.
  • Ана е повисока од мене. — Ana is taller than me.

Because од is a preposition, a pronoun after it takes the long form: мене, тебе, него, неа, нас, вас, нив (see долги заменки: мене; тебе; него; неа). Од also goes with numbers: повеќе од сто луѓе (more than a hundred people). With a superlative it means of: најдобар од сите (the best of all).

Отколку + a longer phrase. Use it when the second part is not a simple noun:

  • a time or place word: Подобро е денес отколку вчера.
  • a да-phrase: Повеќе сакам да читам отколку да гледам телевизија.
  • a full clause, usually with што: Потешко е отколку што мислев. (It is harder than I thought.)

For as ... as and the same as, see ист како; различен од.
