Same and Different

ист ... како means the same ... as, and различен од means different from: Имам ист телефон како тебе (I have the same phone as you), Овој град е различен од Скопје (This city is different from Skopje).

How It Works

The same. Ист is an ordinary adjective: ист телефон, иста кола, исто место, исти чевли. Put the person or thing you compare with after како. A pronoun after како usually takes its long form: како тебе, како мене, како него (see full pronouns).

With the article. When you mean one particular thing you both know, use the article on the adjective: истиот, истата, истото, истите. Работиме во истата фирма (We work at the same company). On its own, истото means the same thing: И јас ќе го земам истото (I will have the same).

Just like. The neuter form исто with како works like an adverb and means just like, the same way as: Зборува исто како татко му (He talks just like his father).

Different. Различен loses its е in the other forms, like other adjectives with a disappearing vowel: различна, различно, различни. Put what you compare with after од: Мојата работа е различна од твојата. When nothing is compared, leave од out: Имаме различни мислења (We have different opinions).

For similar to, Macedonian uses сличен на (see adjectives with prepositions). To say that something is bigger or better, use од and отколку with a comparative.

  1. Имам ист телефон како тебе.

    I have the same phone as you.

    Ист matches the masculine noun телефон, and the pronoun after како is the long form тебе.

  2. Работиме во истата фирма.

    We work at the same company.

    The article on истата points to one particular company.

  3. И јас ќе го земам истото.

    I'll have the same.

    Истото stands alone and means the same thing, for example when ordering.

  4. Зборува исто како татко му.

    He talks just like his father.

    Исто како describes how someone does something.

  5. Овој град е различен од Скопје.

    This city is different from Skopje.

  6. Сестра ми е многу различна од мене.

    My sister is very different from me.

    Различна matches the feminine subject сестра.

Common Mistakes

  • Using како after различен.

    Мојот телефон е различен како твојот.
    Мојот телефон е различен од твојот.

    Различен always takes од. Како belongs with ист and with исто како.

  • Leaving ист in the masculine form with a feminine noun.

    Имаме ист кола.
    Имаме иста кола.

    Ист is an adjective, so it takes the ending of the noun: иста кола, исто место, исти чевли.
