многу / повеќе / најмногу
Comparing Amounts
Многу (a lot) becomes повеќе (more) and најмногу (the most). Малку (a little) becomes помалку (less) and најмалку (the least).
How It Works
Most words compare with по- and нај- (по-; нај-). Многу is the only irregular one.
The forms:
- многу → повеќе → најмногу — a lot, more, the most
- малку → помалку → најмалку — a little, less, the least
Uses:
- Preference: Повеќе сакам чај отколку кафе. — I prefer tea to coffee.
- Favourite: Најмногу ми се допаѓа морето. — I like the sea best.
- Amounts: Сега пијам помалку кафе. — Now I drink less coffee.
- More than a number: повеќе од илјада луѓе — more than a thousand people.
- Not any more: with не, повеќе means "any more": Не пушам повеќе. — I don't smoke any more.
- At most: најмногу два часа — two hours at most.
Than: after повеќе and помалку, од usually comes before a number, noun or pronoun, and отколку introduces a clause or another phrase. When you choose between two things, отколку can also come before a noun, as in Повеќе сакам чај отколку кафе. (од; отколку во споредба). A pronoun after од takes its full form: повеќе од тебе, помалку од мене (see долги заменки: мене; тебе; него; неа).
Adjectives are different: English says "more beautiful", but Macedonian puts по- on the adjective: поубав, повисок. Повеќе compares amounts and actions, not qualities.
Style note: in speech you may hear најповеќе, and in some dialects помногу, but the standard forms are повеќе and најмногу. With the article, повеќето means "most of": Повеќето луѓе работат во градот. (Most people work in the city.)

Common Mistakes
Using многу instead of повеќе to compare.
Тој работи многу од мене.Тој работи повеќе од мене.Многу means "a lot" and does not compare, and многу од means "many of". To say "more than me", use the comparative повеќе with од.
Using повеќе with an adjective, as in English "more tall".
Тој е повеќе висок од мене.Тој е повисок од мене.Adjectives form the comparative with по- written as one word: висок → повисок.
Using the subject pronoun after од.
Работам повеќе од ти.Работам повеќе од тебе.After a preposition such as од, use the full object pronoun: тебе, мене, него.
