кој било / било кој
Anyone at All
Било with a question word means "any ... at all": Било кој може да научи да плива. (Anyone can learn to swim.) Може да седнеш каде било. (You can sit anywhere.)
How It Works
The family.
- кој било / било кој: anyone, any one
- што било / било што: anything
- каде било / било каде: anywhere
- кога било / било кога: any time
- каков било / било каков: any kind of
Agreement. Кој and каков change like adjectives to match a noun: која било книга (any book), кое било место (any place), било какви прашања (any questions). Било itself never changes. For a person as the object, the standard form is кого: Прашај било кого. (Ask anyone.) In casual speech you will also hear кој било here.
"Anyone" after не. In a negative sentence, English "anyone" and "anything" are usually никој and ништо: Не видов никого. (I didn't see anyone.) With не, кој било often means "not just anyone": Тој не е кој било, тој е нашиот директор. (He is not just anyone; he is our director.)
Someone or anyone. Некој is one person you do not name: Некој те бара. (Someone is looking for you.) Било кој means the choice is open: Кој било од нас може да ти помогне. (Any of us can help you.)
Other ways to say it. In everyday speech you will also hear кој и да е and што и да е with the same meaning: Кој и да е може да ти каже. Some speakers feel that кој било sounds a little more formal. To talk about whoever does something, with a whole clause, use кој и да: Кој и да дојде, кажи му да почека.
