hefði átt að / hefði getað

Should Have and Could Have

Level 4

Ég hefði átt að koma fyrr. (I should have come earlier.) Þú hefðir getað hringt. (You could have called.)

How It Works

The forms of hefði. ég hefði, þú hefðir, hann/hún/það hefði, við hefðum, þið hefðuð, þeir/þær/þau hefðu.

Should have: hefði átt að + infinitive. This is the past of ætti að (should). Use it for something that was the right thing to do but did not happen:

  • Ég hefði átt að koma fyrr. (I should have come earlier.)
  • Við hefðum átt að taka strætó. (We should have taken the bus.)
  • Þú hefðir ekki átt að segja þetta. (You shouldn't have said that.) ekki comes after hefði.

Could have: hefði getað + supine. geta takes the supine, so the main verb is in the supine too:

  • Þú hefðir getað hringt. (You could have called.)
  • Við hefðum getað unnið leikinn. (We could have won the game.)

More of the same pattern. Other modal verbs work the same way: Ég hefði viljað hjálpa (I would have liked to help), Þú hefðir mátt segja mér það (You could have told me), Ég hefði þurft að vita það fyrr (I would have needed to know that sooner).

A common exclamation: Þú hefðir átt að sjá svipinn á honum! (You should have seen the look on his face!)

Examples (6)

  1. Ég hefði átt að koma fyrr.

    I should have come earlier.

Word by Word: I would-have ought to come earlier.

  2. Þú hefðir getað hringt.

    You could have called.

Word by Word: You would-have been-able called.

getað is followed by the supine hringt.

  3. Við hefðum átt að taka strætó.

We should have taken the bus.

Word by Word: We would-have ought to take bus.

  4. Þú hefðir ekki átt að segja þetta.

    You shouldn't have said that.

Word by Word: You would-have not ought to say this.

  5. Við hefðum getað unnið leikinn.

We could have won the game.

Word by Word: We would-have been-able won the-game.

  6. Þú hefðir átt að sjá svipinn á honum!

You should have seen the look on his face!

Word by Word: You would-have ought to see the-look on him!

Common Mistakes

  • Using the supine after átt að.

Ég hefði átt að komið fyrr.
Ég hefði átt að koma fyrr.

að is always followed by the infinitive: átt að koma, not átt að komið.

  • Using the infinitive after getað.

    Þú hefðir getað hringja.
    Þú hefðir getað hringt.

geta takes the supine, so the next verb is in the supine too: getað hringt, getað komið.
