eiga að
Supposed to (Eiga Að)
Hvað á ég að gera? (What am I supposed to do?) eiga að + infinitive tells you what is expected or planned.
How It Works
The forms. These are the forms of eiga (to own):
- ég á, þú átt, hún á, við eigum, þið eigið, þau eiga
- Past: ég átti, við áttum
Uses.
- Asking what to do: Hvað á ég að gera? Hvar á ég að skrifa undir? (Where should I sign?)
- Instructions and rules: Þú átt að beygja til vinstri. Maður á að fara úr skónum. (You're supposed to take off your shoes.)
- Plans, timetables and forecasts: Rútan á að koma klukkan fimm. Það á að rigna á morgun.
- Plans that did not happen, in the past: Við áttum að hittast í gær. (We were supposed to meet yesterday.)
Compared with its neighbours. eiga að is about an expectation from outside. verða að says there is no choice. ætla að is your own plan: Hvað ætlarðu að gera? (What are you going to do?). ætti að gives advice: Þú ættir að hvíla þig.
Hearsay. Hún á að vera mjög góð can mean she is said to be very good. See Reported and Probable.
