Chains of Modal Verbs

Level 6

Hann hlýtur að hafa þurft að fara. (He must have had to leave.) Ég hefði viljað geta hjálpað. (I would have liked to be able to help.)

How It Works

Each verb decides the next form.

  • að + infinitive after hljóta, eiga, þurfa, verða, ætla and kunna (may): hlýtur að hafa
  • bare infinitive after vilja, munu, skulu and mega: viljað geta
  • supine after hafa and geta: hafa þurft, geta hjálpað

Reading a chain. Take Hann hlýtur að hafa þurft að fara one step at a time:

  • hlýtur needs að + infinitive → að hafa
  • hafa needs a supine → þurft
  • þurfa needs að + infinitive → að fara

Past wishes and regrets. Chains often start with hefði, as in hefði átt að/hefði getað:

  • Ég hefði viljað geta hjálpað. (I would have liked to be able to help.)
  • Við hefðum átt að geta klárað þetta fyrr. (We should have been able to finish this sooner.)

Guessing about the past. kunna að and hljóta að + hafa + supine guess about something that happened: Þetta kann að hafa verið misskilningur. (This may have been a misunderstanding.)

Only the first verb changes for person and tense. All the others stay in the infinitive or the supine.

  2. Ég hefði viljað geta hjálpað.

I would have liked to be able to help.

vilja takes a bare infinitive (geta), and geta takes a supine (hjálpað).

  3. Þú átt að geta gert þetta sjálfur.

You should be able to do this yourself.

Word by Word: You ought to can done this self.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out að after hljóta.

Hann hlýtur hafa þurft að fara.
Hann hlýtur að hafa þurft að fara.

hljóta always needs að before the next verb.

  • Using að + infinitive after geta instead of the supine.

Ég hefði viljað geta að hjálpa.
    Ég hefði viljað geta hjálpað.

geta takes the supine, with no að: geta hjálpað.
