geta + Supine
Can (Geta + Supine)
geta means can. The next verb is in the supine: Ég get komið á morgun (I can come tomorrow).
How It Works
Present forms.
- ég get, þú getur, hann / hún / það getur
- við getum, þið getið, þeir / þær / þau geta
With þú the question form joins up as geturðu (joined forms).
geta + supine. The verb after geta goes in the supine, with no að in between:
- koma → Ég get komið.
- hjálpa → Geturðu hjálpað mér?
- sofa → Ég get ekki sofið.
This sets geta apart from vilja and mega, which take a plain infinitive (Ég vil koma, Má ég koma?), and from kunna and þurfa, which take að + infinitive.
Short answers. The pronoun það can stand for the action: Geturðu hjálpað mér? Já, ég get það. In the negative, it comes before ekki: Ég get það ekki.
geta or kunna? geta is about being able to do something right now or in general. To say you know a language or a skill, Icelandic uses kunna: Ég kann íslensku. See vita/þekkja/kunna.
Other tenses. The past is gat (við gátum): Ég gat ekki komið. See modal verbs past. For polite requests, use Gætirðu ...? (gætirðu/mætti ég).

Adding að after geta.
Ég get að hjálpa þér.Ég get hjálpað þér.geta is followed directly by the supine, with no að.
Using geta to say you know a language.
Ég get íslensku.Ég kann íslensku.geta cannot take a language as its object. Use kunna, or say Ég get talað íslensku.
