ætla að
Going to (Ætla Að)
Say what you plan to do with ætla að + a verb: Ég ætla að fara heim (I'm going to go home).
How It Works
The forms. ætla is a regular a-verb:
- ég ætla
- þú ætlar
- hann / hún / það ætlar
- við ætlum
- þið ætlið
- þeir / þær / þau ætla
Then add að and a verb in the infinitive: Ég ætla að læra (I'm going to study).
Plans and the future. Icelandic has no future ending on the verb. When you talk about something you have decided to do, ætla að is the natural choice: Við ætlum að borða úti í kvöld (We're going to eat out tonight). For a fixed arrangement, the plain present tense also works: Ég kem á morgun. munu is a more formal way to predict.
Questions and negatives. In a question þú joins the verb: Hvað ætlarðu að gera? (What are you going to do?). Ekki comes right after ætla: Hún ætlar ekki að koma (She isn't going to come).
Going somewhere. With a place word, the verb of motion can be left out: Ég ætla heim (I'm going home).
Ordering. Ég ætla að fá ... (I'll have ...) is one of the usual ways to order food and drinks, next to Má ég fá ...?.
In the past. Ég ætlaði að ... means "I was going to" or "I meant to", often about a plan that did not happen: Ég ætlaði að hringja í þig (I meant to call you).
