Word order
hvað takes the first place and the verb comes second, as in The Verb Comes Second: Hvað viltu drekka? (What do you want to drink?)

hvað or hvaða?
hvað stands alone. When a noun follows, use Which (hvaða): Hvaða lit viltu? (Which color do you want?)

hvað after a preposition
hvað is a form of Who (hver). After a preposition that takes the accusative, it stays hvað: Um hvað er bókin? (What is the book about?). After one that takes the dative it becomes hverju: af hverju means why, literally from what.

Common Mistakes

  • Using hvað directly before a noun.

    Hvað bók ertu að lesa?
    Hvaða bók ertu að lesa?

    hvað stands on its own. Before a noun, use hvaða (which, what kind of).

  • Keeping statement order after hvað.

    Hvað þú ert að gera?
    Hvað ertu að gera?

    The verb must come right after hvað, before the subject.
