þurfa að

Need to (Þurfa Að)

Level 2

Ég þarf að fara. (I need to go.) Use þurfa að + infinitive for things you need to do.

How It Works

The forms. þurfa belongs to a small group of verbs whose present tense has no -ur in the singular (see Verbs Like Vita and Kunna):

  • ég þarf, þú þarft, hann / hún / það þarf
  • við þurfum, þið þurfið, þeir / þær / þau þurfa

The past is þurfti (modal verbs past): Hún þurfti að bíða lengi.

With a verb. Use að + infinitive: Ég þarf að fara, Þarftu að vinna á morgun?

With a noun. Put the thing you need right after the verb, with no að: Þarftu hjálp? Ég þarf nýjan síma. In everyday language the noun is in the accusative. In formal or older writing you may also see the genitive, as in þurfa hjálpar.

Not have to. Þú þarft ekki að borga means you don't have to pay. It does not forbid anything. To say that something is not allowed, use mega: Þú mátt ekki reykja hér.

Close relatives. verða að is stronger (must, have no choice). mig vantar says that something is missing or lacking: Mig vantar penna.

    We need to buy milk.

She had to wait a long time.

Word by Word: She needed to wait long.

    I need a new phone.

Word by Word: I need new phone.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out að before the verb.

    Ég þarf fara.
    Ég þarf að fara.

þurfa takes að before an infinitive, unlike vilja and mega.

  • Using the þú form with ég.

    Ég þarft að læra meira.
    Ég þarf að læra meira.

With ég the form is þarf. þarft is for þú.

  • Using mega ekki when you mean "don't have to".

Þú mátt ekki mæta á morgun, það er frí.
Þú þarft ekki að mæta á morgun, það er frí.

Þú mátt ekki mæta means you are not allowed to come in. On a day off it is simply not necessary, so use þarft ekki að.
