ætti að

Should (Ætti Að)

Level 3

ætti að + infinitive means should: Þú ættir að hvíla þig (You should rest). Það ætti að vera opið (It should be open).

How It Works

Forms. ég ætti, þú ættir, hún ætti, við ættum, þið ættuð, þau ættu + að + infinitive. In questions with þú, the clitic form is common: Ættirðu ekki að hvíla þig? (Shouldn't you rest?)

Advice. Þú ættir að hvíla þig. (You should rest.) Við ættum að fara núna. (We should go now.) As a question it asks for advice: Ætti ég að hringja í hann? (Should I call him?)

Expectation. ætti að can also say what is likely: Það ætti að vera opið til sex (It should be open until six). Hún ætti að vera komin heim (She should be home by now), with vera kominn.

ætti að or á að? Þú átt að states a rule or instruction: Þú átt að beygja til vinstri (You're supposed to turn left). Þú ættir að is a friendly suggestion. For real necessity, use verða að or þurfa að.

Should have. ætti refers to the present or future. For the past, use hefði átt að: Ég hefði átt að koma fyrr. See hefði átt að/hefði getað.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out að.

    Þú ættir hvíla þig.
    Þú ættir að hvíla þig.

ætti needs að before the infinitive, unlike skulu, munu and myndi.

  • Using the wrong person form.

    Þú ætti að hvíla þig.
    Þú ættir að hvíla þig.

With þú the form ends in -r: ættir.

  • Using ætti for a past situation.

Ég ætti að koma fyrr í gær.
Ég hefði átt að koma fyrr í gær.

ætti refers to now or the future. For should have, use hefði átt að.
