Past Tense of Modal Verbs
Modal verbs have their own past forms: Ég gat ekki komið í gær (I couldn't come yesterday).
How It Works
The past forms.
- geta → gat (þú gast, við gátum): Ég gat ekki komið.
- vilja → vildi (við vildum): Hún vildi fara heim.
- mega → mátti (við máttum): Ég mátti ekki fara út.
- þurfa → þurfti (við þurftum): Við þurftum að bíða.
- kunna → kunni (við kunnum): Hann kunni ekki að synda.
- verða að → varð að (við urðum að): Ég varð að vinna.
gat and varð follow the strong pattern (gat, gast, gat). The others take the endings -i, -ir, -i, -um, -uð, -u.
The next verb does not change. Keep the same pattern as in the present:
- geta + supine: gat komið
- vilja and mega + infinitive: vildi fara, mátti fara
- þurfa að, verða að and kunna + að + infinitive: þurfti að bíða, varð að vinna, kunni að synda
What about munu? munu (will) has no everyday simple past. Its forms mundi and myndi mean "would": Ég myndi koma ef ég gæti (I would come if I could). See myndi.
Watch the double meanings. vildi is both the past of vilja and a polite form: Ég vildi gjarnan fá kaffi (I would like coffee). The polite forms of geta and mega have a different vowel from the past: Gætirðu ...? and Mætti ég ...?, not gat and mátti. See gætirðu/mætti ég.
