verða að
Must (Verða Að)
Ég verð að fara. (I must go.) Use verða að + infinitive when something simply has to happen.
How It Works
The forms. verða has a vowel change in the past:
- Present: ég verð, þú verður, hún verður, við verðum, þið verðið, þau verða
- Past: ég varð, við urðum, þau urðu
What it means. verða að says there is no real choice: Ég verð að vakna snemma (I have to get up early). It is a little stronger than þurfa að (need to) and different from eiga að (be supposed to). Friends also use it to recommend something with enthusiasm: Þú verður að sjá þessa mynd!
Must not. English "you must not" is not þú verður ekki að. Use mega: Þú mátt ekki reykja hér. To say something is not necessary, use þarft ekki að.
Other meanings of verða. The same verb also means will be (verða (will be)): Ég verð heima á morgun, and become (verða): Hann varð reiður. When verða is followed by að and an infinitive, it means must.
