ვარ/ხარ/არის
I Am, You Are, He Is
ვარ, ხარ and არის mean I am, you are and he, she or it is.
How It Works
| Person | Pronoun | To be | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | მე | ვარ | მე სტუდენტი ვარ. |
| you (one friend) | შენ | ხარ | შენ ექიმი ხარ? |
| he, she, it | ის | არის | ის სახლში არის. |
The same forms say where someone is: მე თბილისში ვარ (I'm in Tbilisi). They also go with adjectives: ის კარგი არის (he or she is good).
Because the form shows the person, you can leave out the pronoun: სტუდენტი ვარ (I'm a student).
In casual speech, and in this course from Level 3, you will meet a short form of არის: the ending -ა, as in ის ექიმია. Until then, use the full არის.
