We Are, You Are, They Are

Level 1Sounds Like vart/khart/arian

ვართ, ხართ and არიან mean we are, you are and they are.

How It Works

PersonPronounTo beExample
weჩვენვართჩვენ მეგობრები ვართ.
you (several, or polite)თქვენხართთქვენ საიდან ხართ?
theyისინიარიანისინი სახლში არიან.

Compare the singular: ვარ becomes ვართ and ხარ becomes ხართ by adding -თ, the plural ending you will see on many verbs. არის becomes არიან.

ხართ has two uses: talking to several people, and talking politely to one person. When you speak politely to one person, the noun stays singular: თქვენ ექიმი ხართ? (Are you a doctor?)

For a group of people, they are is არიან: ბავშვები სახლში არიან (the children are at home).
