უნდა + Optative

Must

Level 4Sounds Like unda

უნდა with the optative means must, have to or should.

How It Works

PersonMust goMust do
Iუნდა წავიდეუნდა გავაკეთო
youუნდა წახვიდეუნდა გააკეთო
he, sheუნდა წავიდესუნდა გააკეთოს
weუნდა წავიდეთუნდა გავაკეთოთ
theyუნდა წავიდნენუნდა გააკეთონ

უნდა (unda) is also the he or she form of want (მინდა, გინდა, უნდა). The cases tell them apart: ნინოს უნდა (Nino wants) has the dative, while must takes the case its own verb needs: ნინომ უნდა დარეკოს (Nino has to call).

For must not, put არ before უნდა: ეს არ უნდა იყიდო (you shouldn't buy this).

უნდა can also make a guess with იყოს: სახლში უნდა იყოს (he must be at home). That use has its own entry.

Examples (5)

  1. უნდა წავიდე, უკვე გვიანია.

I have to go; it's already late.

The optative shows the person: I.

  2. ყველამ უნდა ისწავლოს ცურვა.

    Everyone should learn to swim.

ყველამ is in the ergative and ცურვა in the nominative.

  3. ხვალ ადრე უნდა ავდგე.

I have to get up early tomorrow.

    A becoming verb.

  4. არ უნდა დააგვიანო.

    You shouldn't be late.

    არ უნდა: should not.

  5. ნინომ ეს წერილი დღესვე უნდა გაგზავნოს.

Nino has to send this letter today.

    დღესვე means today itself.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving a doing verb's subject in the nominative.

    ნინო წერილი უნდა გაგზავნოს.
    ნინომ წერილი უნდა გაგზავნოს.

With a doing verb in the optative, the doer takes the ergative.

  • Using მინდა when you mean I have to.

    ხვალ ადრე მინდა ავდგე.
    ხვალ ადრე უნდა ავდგე.

მინდა means I want. For must, use უნდა, which never changes.
