Plural Things, Singular Verb
When the subject is several things, Georgian usually keeps the verb singular.
How It Works
| People: plural verb | Things: singular verb |
|---|---|
| ბავშვები ეზოში არიან. (The children are in the yard.) | წიგნები მაგიდაზეა. (The books are on the table.) |
| სტუმრები მოვიდნენ. (The guests came.) | ფოთლები ყვითელია. (The leaves are yellow.) |
Georgian treats a group of things as one whole, so the verb usually stays singular: არის or the short -ა.
This shows most clearly with to be: ჩემი გასაღებები სად არის? (where are my keys?). With other verbs you will sometimes hear a plural verb for things, as in მანქანები მიდიან (the cars are going), but the singular is the safe choice.
Animals usually go with people: ძაღლები ყეფენ (the dogs are barking).
