პატივცემულო
Formal Address
Start a formal letter or email with პატივცემულო and the name in the calling form.
How It Works
A formal letter in Georgian opens with an address in the calling form, the vocative. The describing word and the title take -ო:
| To whom | Opening |
|---|---|
| a man | პატივცემულო ბატონო დავით, |
| a woman | პატივცემულო ქალბატონო ნინო, |
| a group | პატივცემულო კოლეგებო, |
| a friend | ძვირფასო ნინო, |
პატივცემული (p'at'ivtsemuli) means respected. It suits work letters, emails to strangers and letters to officials. ძვირფასო (dear) is for family and friends.
The name follows the rule you learned at Level 2: a name such as დავითი drops its -ი (ბატონო დავით), while a name that ends in a vowel stays as it is (ბატონო გიორგი, ქალბატონო ნინო).
Sign off with პატივისცემით (respectfully) and your name. A speech to a hall often opens with ქალბატონებო და ბატონებო (ladies and gentlemen).
