მყავს
I Have a Person or Animal
მყავს means I have, for people and animals.
How It Works
| Who | has |
|---|---|
| I | მყავს |
| you (one friend) | გყავს |
| he, she | ჰყავს |
| we | გვყავს |
| you (several, or polite) | გყავთ |
| they | ჰყავთ |
Notice the ჰ- in ჰყავს and ჰყავთ. It is always written.
Compare the two verbs: ქოლგა მაქვს (I have an umbrella) is about a thing, while ძმა მყავს (I have a brother) and კატა მყავს (I have a cat) are about living beings.
Ask about family with რამდენი: რამდენი და გყავს? (How many sisters do you have?)
A car is the one common exception: most Georgians use მყავს for it too, as in მანქანა მყავს (I have a car). For other things, use მაქვს.
