Plural Adjectives

Level 1

The adjective copies the number of the noun.

How It Works

An adjective always matches the noun it describes. When the noun is plural, the adjective is plural too.

OneMore than one
bela urbobelaj urboj
nova libronovaj libroj
bona amikobonaj amikoj

Every adjective that describes the noun takes the -j: belaj novaj domoj. The order of the endings is always -j first and then -n: grandajn katojn.

The article la stays the same: la novaj libroj. A number such as tri takes no -j, but the adjective and the noun after it do: tri novaj libroj.

Examples (4)

  1. Ana havas grandajn katojn.

    Ana has big cats.

Grandajn and katojn both have -j and -n.

  2. Novaj libroj estas en la ĉambro.

New books are in the room.

Novaj copies the plural of libroj.

  3. Kenji kaj Wei estas bonaj amikoj.

Kenji and Wei are good friends.

Bonaj copies the plural of amikoj.

  4. Parizo kaj Romo estas belaj urboj.

Paris and Rome are beautiful cities.

    Belaj urboj are both plural.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving -j off the adjective.

Nova libroj estas en la ĉambro.
Novaj libroj estas en la ĉambro.

The adjective must show the plural too, because the noun is plural.
