Some Kind, Some Way, Some Amount

Level 3

These are the less common i- words.

How It Works

WordMeaningExample
iasome kind ofMi trovos ian solvon.
ielsomehowAna iel venos al la kongreso.
iomsome, a littleMi volas iom da teo.
ialfor some reasonPedro ial ne respondas.
iessomeone'sIes telefono sonoras.

Ia is an adjective, so it agrees with its noun (iaj, ian). Iom is an amount that is small but still counts, and it goes with da before the thing: iom da teo. Ies usually stands for one unknown person and replaces la.

Iel and ial do not take -j or -n. Both are used less often than iom.

Examples (5)

  1. Mi trovos ian solvon.

    I will find some solution.

Ian agrees with solvon in -n.

  2. Ana iel venos al la kongreso.

Ana will somehow come to the congress.

    Iel means in some way.

  3. Mi volas iom da teo.

Iom da is followed by the thing counted.

  4. Pedro ial ne respondas.

Ial gives a reason without saying it.

  5. Ies telefono sonoras.

Ies stands for an unknown owner and replaces la.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out da after iom.

    Mi volas iom teon.
    Mi volas iom da teo.

Iom is followed by da and then the thing counted, so teo has no -n.
