tio, ke

The Fact That

Level 5

Tio, ke means the fact that, and it lets a clause follow a preposition or act as a subject.

How It Works

Job of the clausePatternExample
after a prepositionpreposition + tio, keMi ĝojas pro tio, ke vi venis.
subjectTio, ke ..., verbTio, ke li ne venis, ne gravas.
after perper tio, keLi vekiĝis per tio, ke iu lin skuis.

Tio stands for the whole clause: the fact that you came. PMEG calls it a helping word. The comma comes before ke, and a tio, ke clause at the start of a sentence is usually closed by a second comma.

After pri, the shorter form is the usual one: Mi ne dubas, ke Kofi venos. The longer Mi ne dubas pri tio, ke Kofi venos is also correct. A few small words go straight before ke without tio: por ke normally, anstataŭ ke often, and sometimes malgraŭ ke, krom ke and sen ke.

Examples (5)

  1. Mi ĝojas pro tio, ke vi venis.

I am glad that you came.

Pro takes the helper tio before the ke clause.

  2. Tio, ke Ana ne respondis, ne signifas, ke ŝi koleras.

The fact that Ana did not answer does not mean that she is angry.

Tio, ke starts the sentence as its subject, and commas set it off.

  3. Hiro dankis min pro tio, ke mi helpis lin.

Hiro thanked me because I had helped him.

Pro tio, ke gives the reason for the thanks.

  4. Mi ne dubas, ke Kofi venos.

I have no doubt that Kofi will come.

Dubi takes pri, and the short form drops both pri and tio.

  5. Tomasz vekiĝis per tio, ke la telefono sonoras.

Tomasz woke up because the telephone was ringing.

Per tio, ke says how it happened.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting a preposition straight before ke.

Mi ĝojas pro ke vi venis.
Mi ĝojas pro tio, ke vi venis.

Pro ke is unusual, and many readers will not follow it. Use pro tio, ke, or ĉar. Only a few words, such as por, go straight before ke.
