ĝi / tio
Ĝi or Tio
Ĝi replaces a noun, and tio replaces a whole idea.
How It Works
| Word | It points to | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ĝi | one named thing or animal | Mi havas aŭton. Ĝi estas nova. |
| tio | a whole sentence or event | Kofi venis. Tio estas bona. |
| tio | something you point at | Kio estas tio? |
In Mi havas aŭton. Ĝi estas nova, ĝi is the car. In Kofi venis. Tio estas bona, tio is the whole fact that Kofi came. A single noun cannot replace it.
Ĝi also fits an animal: La hundo ŝatas la parkon, kaj ĝi kuras tie. Tio is often used to point at something you cannot name: Kio estas tio sur la tablo? Both words take -n as objects: ĝin, tion.
