One of and Some of

Level 4

El shows which group a person or thing belongs to.

How It Works

PartWith elMeaning
unuunu el la knabojone of the boys
kelkajkelkaj el nisome of us
multajmultaj el niaj amikojmany of our friends
la plej altala plej alta el ĉiujthe tallest of all

The part can be a number, a word like kelkaj or multaj, or a superlative. When the whole phrase is an object, the -n goes on the part: Mi renkontis kelkajn el viaj amikoj. The group after el keeps the plain form, because el is a preposition.

El also names the whole that an amount is taken from: Trinku el la vino means Trinku iom de la vino. When that whole has la, tiu or a possessive, use el or de after the amount, not da: iom el la pano.

Examples (5)

  1. Unu el niaj gastoj estas amiko de Ewa.

One of our guests is a friend of Ewa's.

Unu is the part, and niaj gastoj is the group it comes from.

  2. Kelkaj el ni parolas Esperanton ĉiutage.

Some of us speak Esperanto every day.

Kelkaj el ni names some speakers out of the group ni.

  3. Min-jun estas la plej juna el la studentoj en nia kurso.

Min-jun is the youngest of the students in our course.

After the superlative, el names the group that Min-jun is compared with.

  4. Mi renkontis kelkajn el viaj amikoj en Parizo.

I met some of your friends in Paris.

Kelkajn has the -n because it is the object. Viaj amikoj stays plain after el.

  5. Tio estis la plej bela tago el mia vivo.

That was the most beautiful day of my life.

El mia vivo names the whole that the day is part of: my life.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting -n on the group after el.

Mi renkontis kelkajn el viajn amikojn.
Mi renkontis kelkajn el viaj amikoj.

El is a preposition, so the group after it keeps the plain form. Only kelkajn, the object, has the -n.

  • Using da before a phrase with la.

Ni manĝis iom da la pano.
Ni manĝis iom el la pano.

Da joins an amount to something that is not pointed out, as in iom da pano. A phrase with la points at one particular thing, so use el or de.
