tre / tro

Very and Too

Level 2

Tre is very, and tro is too much.

How It Works

WordMeaningExample
treverytre bela
trotoo, more than neededtro granda
tro multetoo muchMi manĝas tro multe.

Tre strengthens an adjective (tre bela), an adverb (tre rapide) or a verb (Mi tre ŝatas muzikon). Tro works in the same places and says that the amount or degree is too high.

Both words stay unchanged and stand before what they change. They do not describe a noun, so say multajn amikojn and not tre amikojn.

To say that there is a large amount, use multe. A later topic explains it.

Examples (5)

  1. La kafo estas tre bona.

    The coffee is very good.

    Tre strengthens the adjective bona.

  2. La teo estas tro varma.

    The tea is too hot.

Tro says that it is hotter than it should be.

  3. Mi tre ŝatas Esperanton.

    I like Esperanto very much.

    Tre can strengthen a verb.

  4. Ŝi parolas tro rapide.

    She speaks too fast.

    Tro strengthens the adverb rapide.

  5. La ĉambro estas tro malgranda por ni.

The room is too small for us.

Tro goes before malgranda, and por ni tells who the room is for.

Common Mistakes

  • Using tre before a noun.

    Mi havas tre amikojn.
    Mi havas multajn amikojn.

Tre cannot describe a noun. To say many friends, use multaj.
