pli + Adjective or Adverb + ol

More ... than

Level 3

Pli means more, and ol means than.

How It Works

PlainComparison
Ana estas alta.Ana estas pli alta ol Kenji.
La trajno estas rapida.La trajno estas pli rapida ol la buso.
Estas varme.Estas pli varme ol hieraŭ.

The adjective keeps its ending and agrees as usual: pli altaj, pli altan. Pli also works with da before an amount: pli da tempo (more time).

After ol, the word has the form it would have in a full sentence. Mi havas pli da tempo ol vi means that I have more time than you have.

Use ol after pli and kiel after tiel. The two are not interchangeable.

Common Mistakes

  • Using kiel instead of ol.

Ana estas pli alta ol Kenji.

After pli, the word that shows what you compare with is ol. Kiel goes with tiel: tiel alta kiel Kenji.
