malpli + Adjective or Adverb + ol
Less ... than
Malpli means less, and ol shows what you compare with.
How It Works

The prefix mal- turns pli into its opposite. After malpli the word ol works as after pli.
Do not mix up malpli and pli mal-. They can mean almost the same, but not always. Li estas malpli bela ol vi (he is less beautiful than you) is a compliment to you. Li estas pli malbela ol vi (he is more ugly than you) is an insult. Use malpli when you mean not as much.

Malpli da tempo means less time.

Malpli varme means less warm. Like Estas varme, it has no subject.
- Tiu vojo estas malpli longa ol la alia.
That road is less long than the other one.
Ol la alia names the road you compare with.
- Kofi parolas malpli rapide ol Ewa.
Kofi speaks less quickly than Ewa.
Malpli rapide compares two ways of speaking.

Using kiel instead of ol.
La teo estas malpli forta kiel la kafo.La teo estas malpli forta ol la kafo.Malpli works like pli: it takes ol. Kiel goes with tiel.
