pli kaj pli

More and More

Level 4

Say pli twice, join the two with kaj, and name the quality once after them.

How It Works

PatternExampleMeaning
pli kaj pli + adjectivepli kaj pli varmawarmer and warmer
pli kaj pli + adverbpli kaj pli bonebetter and better
pli kaj pli da + nounpli kaj pli da homojmore and more people
malpli kaj malpli da + nounmalpli kaj malpli da tempoless and less time

The adjective or adverb stands once, after the pair. The pair tells about change over time, so it often follows fariĝi (to become) or a verb that shows time passing: Nun komputiloj fariĝas pli kaj pli oftaj.

Do not confuse pli with plu. Plu means "continuing". Ana rakontis plu means Ana went on with her story, and Ana rakontis pli means she told more.

Examples (5)

  1. La tagoj fariĝas pli kaj pli longaj.

The days are getting longer and longer.

Pli kaj pli shows a steady increase, and longaj agrees with tagoj.

  2. Pli kaj pli da junuloj en Afriko lernas Esperanton.

More and more young people in Africa learn Esperanto.

Before a noun, pli kaj pli is followed by da.

Ana speaks Esperanto better and better.

Pli kaj pli goes before the adverb bone.

Fariĝis goes naturally with a growing change.

Common Mistakes

  • Using plu where pli is meant.

La tagoj fariĝas plu kaj plu longaj.
La tagoj fariĝas pli kaj pli longaj.

Plu means that something goes on, so the first sentence does not say that the days grow. For growth, use pli.
