tra, trans, preter, ĉirkaŭ, ekster

Through, Across, Past, Around, Outside

Level 3

Five prepositions for through, across, past, around and outside.

How It Works

WordMeaningExample
trathroughNi promenas tra la parko.
transon the other side of, acrossTrans la rivero estas la stacidomo.
preterpast, byLa trajno pasas preter nia domo.
ĉirkaŭaround; aboutNi sidas ĉirkaŭ la tablo.
eksteroutsideEwa loĝas ekster la urbo.

A moving verb already shows the movement, so tra la parko and preter la domo need no -n. With trans, -n shows that the movement ends on the far side: La hundo naĝas trans la riveron (to the other side). The plain form says where something is: ekster la urbo, trans la rivero.

Before a number, ĉirkaŭ means about: ĉirkaŭ dudek homoj (about twenty people). It only softens the number, so the noun keeps its own ending.

Examples (5)

  1. Ni promenas tra la parko.

We are walking through the park.

Tra shows movement inside the park.

  2. Trans la rivero estas la stacidomo.

On the other side of the river is the station.

Trans means on the far side.

  3. La trajno pasas preter nia domo.

The train goes past our house.

Preter shows movement along the side of the house.

  4. Ni sidas ĉirkaŭ la tablo.

We are sitting around the table.

Ĉirkaŭ shows a position on every side.

  5. Ewa loĝas ekster la urbo.

    Ewa lives outside the city.

Ekster shows a position outside, so the noun is plain.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding -n to a place of position.

    Ewa loĝas ekster la urbon.
    Ewa loĝas ekster la urbo.

Loĝi shows where someone lives, so urbo keeps its plain form.
