ser-hi / estar-se
Ser-hi and Estar-se for Presence and Staying
Ser-hi can mark presence; estar-se can describe staying somewhere for a period.
How It Works
La directora hi és says that the director is there. Hi replaces the location with ser, while the finite form agrees with the person present. Estar-se in s'està a Girona una setmana describes a stay, not simply a point on a map.
Ordinary location with ser and estar varies with the kind of subject, the intended duration and the regional model. Do not reduce all locative uses to a rigid permanent/temporary distinction. Events such as meetings have a separate established ser pattern.
Keep reflexive estar-se distinct from plain estar plus an adjective. Its pronoun changes with the subject: m'estaré, t'estaràs, s'estarà. A stated duration helps make the staying interpretation clear.
