ser + Location
Ser for Location in the Broad Standard
Ser is the broad-standard starting point for plain location and the location of an event.
How It Works
Les claus són al calaix states where the keys are. La reunió és a la sala gran locates an event, and la reunió és a les sis locates it in time. These uses do not require the place or event to be permanent.
Estar or estar-se can add staying, remaining, residence, duration or a resulting situation: estaré al despatx tota la tarda. Regional usage varies, so do not teach that every estar plus a location is wrong. The basic contrast is plain location versus an additional interpretation, with specific constructions and varieties affecting the choice.
Haver-hi presents what exists in a location: al calaix hi ha unes claus. Ser instead can locate the identified thing. This information-structure distinction helps choose a natural sentence when English uses there is or be.
