Left Dislocation and Clitic Resumption
A dislocated object topic is normally resumed by a matching weak pronoun.
How It Works
Aquest llibre, ja l'he llegit places the book before the clause as its topic. The direct-object clitic l’ then supplies the object inside the clause. Right dislocation reverses the order: ja l'he llegit, aquest llibre.
The resumed pronoun must match the function and reference. De diners, no en tinc uses partitive en; a la Maria, li escriuré uses a recipient pronoun. Topic placement is therefore not a rule that every fronted phrase takes el or la.
Contrastive focus is a different construction and does not always use a resumptive clitic. Punctuation and intonation help distinguish a detached topic from a focused element integrated into the clause.
