ser/estar + Location
Ser and Estar for Location
Use ser for simple presence; estar can emphasize a stay or time spent in a place.
How It Works
For a neutral answer about where someone or something is, ser is a useful standard choice: soc a casa, les claus són al calaix. Estar can present being somewhere as a stay, residence or period spent there. Everyday regional usage also extends estar to simple location.
Compare soc a Girona, which locates me, with estaré a Girona tres dies, which presents a three-day stay. Estar-se can explicitly express staying: m'estic en un hotel. Do not teach the English distinction between permanent and temporary as a complete rule for Catalan ser/estar.
An event takes ser for its location: la reunió és al despatx. A person's physical or emotional state follows different rules from the location of that person.
