တတ်

Knowing How to

Level 2

တတ် also describes a habit: သူ နောက်ကျတတ်တယ် means "He tends to be late."

How It Works

English uses "can" for many ideas. Burmese splits them up, and တတ် is the one for skills you have learned, like driving, swimming, cooking or speaking a language.

BurmeseEnglish
မြန်မာလို ပြောတတ်တယ်။I can speak Burmese.
ရေမကူးတတ်ဘူး။I can't swim.
စက်ဘီး စီးတတ်လား။Can you ride a bike?

For ability in one situation, such as "I can come tomorrow", use နိုင်. တတ် is only for skills and habits.

As a habit word, တတ် says that something happens often: ဒီလမ်းမှာ ကားကျပ်တတ်တယ် (The traffic on this road is often bad).

To answer a တတ်လား question, say the verb back: စီးတတ်တယ် (Yes, I can ride) or မစီးတတ်ဘူး (No, I can't). Burmese answers often skip "yes" and "no" and repeat the verb.

To say you can do something a little, put နည်းနည်း before the verb: နည်းနည်း ချက်တတ်တယ် (I can cook a little).

Common Mistakes

  • Using တတ် for ability in one situation.

    မနက်ဖြန် လာတတ်တယ်။
    မနက်ဖြန် လာနိုင်တယ်။

Coming tomorrow is not a skill. Use နိုင် for "able to" this time.

  • Putting မ before တတ်.

    ကားမောင်းမတတ်ဘူး။
    ကားမမောင်းတတ်ဘူး။

မ goes right before the main verb မောင်း.
