သင့်
Should
For "shouldn't", put မ before the verb: မစားသင့်ဘူး (You shouldn't eat it).
How It Works
သင့် gives advice or says what is right to do. It goes after the verb, like ချင် and နိုင်.
| Form | Example | English |
|---|---|---|
| statement | သွားသင့်တယ်။ | You should go. |
| negative | မသွားသင့်ဘူး။ | You shouldn't go. |
| yes-or-no question | သွားသင့်လား။ | Should I go? |
| question word | ဘယ်ကို သွားသင့်လဲ။ | Where should I go? |
သင့် is softer than ရ. ရမယ် says you must, and သင့်တယ် says it is a good idea.
With older people, direct advice can sound bossy. A softer way is ရင် ကောင်းမယ်: စောစော အိပ်ရင် ကောင်းမယ် (It would be good to sleep early).
To ask for advice, put the question word before the verb: ဘာစားသင့်လဲ (What should I eat?), ဘယ်တော့ သွားသင့်လဲ (When should I go?). People answer with the verb and သင့်တယ်: ရှမ်းခေါက်ဆွဲ စားသင့်တယ် (You should try Shan noodles).
