ကြွ / ဘုန်းပေး / တင်ပါ့ဘုရား
Speaking to and About Monks
Monks are counted with ပါး, never with ယောက်.
How It Works
Burmese shows respect to monks with a special set of words. You will hear them at every monastery, and people use them when they talk about monks too.
| Everyday word | For a monk | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| လာ / သွား | ကြွ | come, go |
| စား | ဘုန်းပေး | eat |
| အိပ် | ကျိန်း | sleep |
| နေ | သီတင်းသုံး | live, stay |
| ထမင်း | ဆွမ်း | meal |
Speaking to a monk changes the people words too.
- Call the monk ဘုန်းဘုန်း, or ဆရာတော် for an abbot.
- Call yourself တပည့်တော် if you are a man and တပည့်တော်မ if you are a woman.
- End sentences with ဘုရား in place of ခင်ဗျာ or ရှင်, and say တင်ပါ့ဘုရား for "yes".
Count monks with ပါး: ဘုန်းကြီး ငါးပါး (five monks). People offer the alms meal with ဆွမ်းကပ် and pay respects with ဖူး.
Use these words for monks only. Talking to a layperson, go back to the ordinary words and endings.
A short, polite reply to a monk is enough: တင်ပါ့ဘုရား. A visitor who learns only this one phrase is already speaking politely.
