With a number, skip တွေ: စာအုပ် သုံးအုပ် already means "three books".

How It Works

Burmese nouns have no plural ending of their own. စာအုပ် can mean "a book" or "books". Add တွေ when you want to say there are several.

For people, use တို့ after a pronoun:

ကျွန်မ (I, woman)ကျွန်မတို့ (we)

ခင်ဗျား (you)ခင်ဗျားတို့ (you all)

After a name, တို့ means that person and his or her group: ဇော်ဇော်တို့ is "Zaw Zaw and the others" or "Zaw Zaw's family".

Writing uses များ where speech says တွေ.

Leave out တွေ when the plural is already clear: ကလေး သုံးယောက် (three children), စာအုပ်အများကြီး (a lot of books). Add it when you want to show there is more than one.

A man says ကျွန်တော်တို့ for "we" and a woman says ကျွန်မတို့, even when the group has both men and women.

  1. စာအုပ်တွေ စားပွဲပေါ်မှာ ရှိတယ်။

    The books are on the table.

    တွေ shows there is more than one book.

  2. ဇော်ဇော်တို့ မနက်ဖြန် လာမယ်။

    Zaw Zaw and the others are coming tomorrow.

    တို့ after a name means that person and his or her group.

  3. ကျွန်မတို့ ရန်ကုန်မှာ နေတယ်။

    We live in Yangon.

    A woman speaks; ကျွန်မတို့ means "we".

  4. သူတို့ ဘယ်ကလာလဲ။

    Where are they from?

    သူတို့ means "they".

  5. ကလေးတွေ ကစားနေတယ်။

    The children are playing.

    ကလေးတွေ means "children".

Common Mistakes

  • Adding တွေ to a pronoun.

    သူတွေ လာမယ်။
    သူတို့ လာမယ်။

    Pronouns take တို့, never တွေ.
