I Think It Will
The same ending gives a guess about right now: (I think she's at home.)
How It Works
To give a guess, say what you think will happen, end it with မယ်, and add ထင်တယ် (I think).
| Fact | Guess |
|---|---|
| မိုးရွာမယ်။ It will rain. I think it'll rain. |
| သူ လာမယ်။ He'll come. I think he'll come. |
| ဈေးကြီးမယ်။ It will be expensive. I think it's expensive. |
The last row shows something useful. Burmese uses မယ်ထင်တယ် for a guess about now as well as about later: ဒေါ်ခင်ခင် အိမ်မှာ ရှိမယ်ထင်တယ်။ (I think Daw Khin Khin is at home.)
For a negative guess, put the negative in the clause and keep ထင်တယ် at the end: မလာဘူးထင်တယ်။ (I don't think he's coming.)
To ask someone's opinion, say ဘယ်လိုထင်လဲ။ (What do you think?)
The polite form puts ပါ before တယ်: နောက်ကျမယ်ထင်ပါတယ်။ (I think I'll be late.)
Examples (5)
I think it's going to rain.
မယ် ends the guess, and ထင်တယ် comes right after it.
I think Daw Khin Khin is at home.
မယ်ထင်တယ် also gives a guess about right now.
I think this shop is expensive.
The describing verb ဈေးကြီး takes မယ် before ထင်တယ်.
I don't think he's coming today.
The negative stays in the clause; သူ can mean he or she.
I think I'm going to be late.
ပါ makes the guess polite; ခင်ဗျာ shows a man is speaking.
Common Mistakes
Putting ထင်တယ် first, as in English.
ထင်တယ် မိုးရွာမယ်။မိုးရွာမယ်ထင်တယ်။In Burmese, ထင်တယ် comes last, after what you think.
Using တယ် in the clause for a guess about tomorrow.
Tomorrow has not happened yet, so the clause takes
