ရဲ
Daring to Do Something
Ask with ရဲလား: မြွေကို ကိုင်ရဲလား။ (Would you dare hold a snake?)
How It Works
ရဲ means "brave". After another verb, it says whether someone has the courage to do it.
| Form | Example | English |
|---|---|---|
| dare | ခုန်ချရဲတယ်။ | He dares to jump in. |
| don't dare | မမေးရဲဘူး။ | I don't dare ask. |
| question | ကိုင်ရဲလား။ | Would you dare hold it? |
The negative is the most common use. Burmese speakers say မ…ရဲဘူး for shyness and fear alike: ဆရာ့ကို မမေးရဲဘူး (I'm too shy to ask the teacher).
Alone, ရဲ is a describing word: သူ အရမ်းရဲတယ် (She's very brave).
Check the spelling. ရဲ has no dot. ရဲ့, with the dot, means "of", as in ကျွန်မရဲ့ (my). Never write မမေးရဲ့ဘူး.
To encourage someone, people say ရဲရဲ, which means "boldly": ရဲရဲပြောပါ (Go ahead, speak up). It is a kind push for a shy learner.
Friends often add မကြောက်နဲ့ (Don't be scared).
