နိုင်

Can and Able to

Level 2

နိုင်တယ် also says something might happen: ဒီနေ့ မိုးရွာနိုင်တယ် means "It might rain today."

How It Works

နိုင် is about being able: you have the time, the strength or the chance. It fits plans, favours and things that might happen.

FormExampleEnglish
statementလာနိုင်တယ်။I can come.
questionလာနိုင်လား။Can you come?
favourလာနိုင်မလား။Could you come?
negativeမလာနိုင်ဘူး။I can't come.

For a skill you have learned, such as swimming or driving, use တတ်. For something you are allowed to do, use လို့ရ.

As a "might" word, နိုင်တယ် says that something is possible: ဈေးတက်နိုင်တယ် (Prices might go up).

To answer a နိုင်လား question, say the verb back: လာနိုင်တယ် (Yes, I can come) or မလာနိုင်ဘူး (No, I can't).

နိုင်မလား sounds softer than a plain request with ပါ, so it suits strangers and older people: ခဏ စောင့်ပေးနိုင်မလား။ (Could you wait a moment?)
