ကြည့်

Trying Something

Level 2

On its own, ကြည့် is the verb "look" or "watch": ရုပ်ရှင်ကြည့်တယ်။ (I watch films.)

How It Works

ကြည့် means "look". Put it after another verb, and it means "do this and see what happens". The main verb comes first, and ကြည့် follows it before ပါ or the ending.

VerbWith ကြည့်
စား eatစားကြည့် taste, try eating
ဝတ် wearဝတ်ကြည့် try on
မေး askမေးကြည့် try asking
ပြော sayပြောကြည့် try saying

Shopkeepers and hosts say it all the time: ဝတ်ကြည့်ပါ။ (Try it on.) စားကြည့်ပါဦး။ (Do have a taste.)

ကြည့် keeps its own meaning too, so ကြည့်ကြည့်ပါ is correct. It means "have a look".

To suggest trying something together, add ရအောင်: မေးကြည့်ရအောင်။ (Let's try asking.)

ကြည့် is for a quick try. For a hard effort, Burmese uses the verb ကြိုးစား (try hard).

In a clothes shop, ask ဝတ်ကြည့်လို့ရလား။ (Can I try it on?)

Examples (5)

  1. လက်ဖက်သုပ် စားကြည့်ပါ။

  4. ကျွန်တော် မြန်မာလို ပြောကြည့်မယ်ခင်ဗျာ။

I'll try saying it in Burmese.

ပြောကြည့် means try saying; ခင်ဗျာ shows a man is speaking.

  5. ဒီသီချင်း နားထောင်ကြည့်ပါ။

    Give this song a listen.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting ကြည့် before the main verb.

    ကြည့်စားပါ။
    စားကြည့်ပါ။

The main verb comes first, and ကြည့် follows it.
