How It Works
Two endings build many of the nouns you meet in signs, news and daily talk.
မှု follows a verb and names the act or its result.

ရေး names a field, an affair or a kind of work.

The two can start from the same verb and mean different things. ကူညီမှု is the help a person gave you. ကူညီရေး is the field of aid work, as in an aid group's name.
Both kinds of noun go into longer words. ပညာရေး plus ဌာန (department) makes ပညာရေးဌာန (the education department).
Writing has a third ending, ခြင်း, for the action itself, such as reading or walking.
Once you know the endings, many new words explain themselves. When you see a long noun ending in မှု or ရေး, look for the verb or noun inside it first.

ကျန်းမာရေး names health as an area of life.
- မနီလာက ပညာရေးဌာနမှာ အလုပ်လုပ်တယ်။
Ma Nilar works in the education department.
ပညာရေး goes into the longer word ပညာရေးဌာန.
- စနေနေ့တိုင်း အိမ်သန့်ရှင်းရေး လုပ်တယ်။
I clean the house every Saturday.
သန့်ရှင်းရေး names the job of cleaning.
Common Mistakes
Using ရေး for the help one person gave.
ခင်ဗျားရဲ့ ကူညီရေးအတွက် ကျေးဇူးတင်ပါတယ်။ခင်ဗျားရဲ့ ကူညီမှုအတွက် ကျေးဇူးတင်ပါတယ်။The help someone gave you is ကူညီမှု. ကူညီရေး names aid work as a field.
