в понеделник (on Monday), през май (in May), на пети май (on the fifth of May). Days and months are written with a small letter.

How It Works

1. Days of the week. понеделник, вторник, сряда, четвъртък, петък, събота, неделя. Use в (see в/във): в понеделник, във вторник, в сряда. The same phrase can mean "on Mondays" for a habit: В събота ходя на пазар (On Saturdays I go to the market). Ask Кой ден е днес? — Днес е сряда.

2. Months. януари, февруари, март, април, май, юни, юли, август, септември, октомври, ноември, декември. The most common preposition is през (see през): през май (in May); в май is also correct and common. Years work the same way: през 2026 година.

3. Dates. Use на and the masculine ordinal number, then the month: на пети май (on the fifth of May), на първи март. The date is written with a numeral: 5 май, 5.05.2026 г. To ask the date: Коя дата е днес? or Кое число сме днес? — Днес е десети септември.

4. Lower case. Unlike English, the names of days and months start with a small letter: в петък, през юли. Only holiday names are capitalized, such as Трети март (Bulgaria's national day).

5. No preposition with минал and следващ. Миналата седмица (last week), следващия месец (next month), тази неделя (this Sunday).

    Вторник starts with в, so the preposition becomes във.

    Dates use на and a masculine ordinal number.

  5. Днес е десети септември.

    Today is the tenth of September.

  6. Ще се видим следващия петък.

    We'll see each other next Friday.

    Следващия needs no preposition.

Common Mistakes

  • Using в instead of на with a date.

    Ще дойда в пети май.
    Ще дойда на пети май.

    A day of the week takes в, but a date with a number takes на.

  • Writing days and months with a capital letter.

    Bulgarian spelling rules require lower case for the names of days and months.

  • Using в before вторник.

    във вторник

    Before a word starting with в or ф, the preposition в becomes във.
