преди / след
Before, Ago and After
Преди points back in time and след points forward. Before a noun they mean before and after: преди обяд, след работа.
How It Works
1. Before a noun: before and after.
- преди обяд (before lunch), преди изпита (before the exam)
- след работа (after work), след филма (after the film)
2. Before an amount of time: ago and in.
- преди два часа (two hours ago), преди година (a year ago), преди малко (a moment ago)
- след десет минути (in ten minutes), след седмица (in a week), след малко (in a moment)
In a story about the past, след with an amount of time means later: След два часа той се върна. (He came back two hours later.)
English puts ago after the time, but Bulgarian always puts преди first.
3. On their own. Преди can mean before, in the past: Преди живеех във Варна. (I used to live in Varna.) For after that, say след това or после.
4. Before a verb. These words go straight before a noun, not a verb. Before a clause, use преди да and след като: Обади се, преди да тръгнеш. (Call before you leave.)
Watch out: преди is about time and пред is about place (in front of), as in the place prepositions.
