The Number Two
два + masculine: два града · две + feminine: две книги · две + neuter: две деца.
How It Works
- Два with masculine nouns for things and animals: два билета (two tickets), два месеца (two months). The noun takes the count form ending in -а or -я. See бройна форма.
- Две with feminine nouns: две книги (two books), две жени (two women).
- Две with neuter nouns: две деца (two children), две кафета (two coffees). See множествено число в среден род.
- Двама for male people or mixed groups: двама студенти (two students). Do not use два or the count form for male people. See мъжколични числителни двама/трима.
Thousands: хиляда is feminine, so it is две хиляди (two thousand), whatever noun follows.
Compound numbers: the last part still agrees: двадесет и два града, двадесет и две книги.
From three up, numbers have no masculine, feminine or neuter forms, although special forms for male people such as трима exist. See числителни от три до десет and един/една/едно.

Using два with a feminine noun.
Купих два книги.Купих две книги.Книга is feminine. Feminine and neuter nouns take две.
Using две with a masculine noun.
Имам две билета.Имам два билета.Билет is masculine, so the number is два.
Using два and the count form for people.
В групата има два студента.В групата има двама студенти.Masculine nouns for people have no count form. Use двама with the ordinary plural.
