First, second, third: първи, втори, трети. They behave like adjectives, so they change with the noun: първи ден, първа среща, първо място.

How It Works

1. First to tenth. първи (1st), втори (2nd), трети (3rd), четвърти (4th), пети (5th), шести (6th), седми (7th), осми (8th), девети (9th), десети (10th). From five on, most are the number plus -и (пет → пети). Първи, втори, трети and четвърти have their own stems, and седем, осем drop a vowel: седми, осми.

2. Agreement. Like adjectives, ordinals change for gender and number:

  • първи урок, първа среща, първо място, първи дни
  • трети клас, трета глава, трето място

3. The article. Ordinals usually name a specific item, so they often take the article: първият ден / първия ден, втората улица, третото място, първите хора. The masculine form follows the full and short article rule: Първият ден беше лесен. but Помня първия ден.

4. Long numbers. Only the last word becomes an ordinal: двайсет и първи (21st), сто и десети (110th). The tens also have their own ordinals: двайсети or двадесети (20th).

5. Everyday uses. Dates use the masculine ordinal: на пети май (on the fifth of May); see days, months and dates. Floors and classes: на третия етаж (on the third floor), в седми клас (in seventh grade). За първи път means for the first time.

    The second street on the left is ours.

    Today is the twenty-first of March.

    Only the last part of the number is an ordinal.

  5. За първи път съм в България.

    It is my first time in Bulgaria.

  6. Тя завърши пета в състезанието.

    She finished fifth in the competition.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a plain number in a date.

    Рожденият ми ден е на пет май.
    Рожденият ми ден е на пети май.

    Dates use ordinal numbers: пети май (the fifth of May).

  • Making every part of a long number an ordinal.

    Днес е двайсети и пети юни.
    Днес е двайсет и пети юни.

    Only the last word becomes an ordinal: двайсет и пети.

  • Forgetting agreement with a feminine noun.

    Завийте по втори улица вдясно.
    Завийте по втората улица вдясно.

    Улица is feminine, so the ordinal is втора, and a specific street takes the article: втората.
