How It Works

1. Eleven to nineteen. единадесет / единайсет (11), дванадесет / дванайсет (12), тринадесет / тринайсет (13), четиринадесет / четиринайсет (14), петнадесет / петнайсет (15), шестнадесет / шестнайсет (16), седемнадесет / седемнайсет (17), осемнадесет / осемнайсет (18), деветнадесет / деветнайсет (19).

2. The tens. двадесет / двайсет (20), тридесет / трийсет (30), четиридесет / четиресет (40), петдесет (50), шестдесет / шейсет (60), седемдесет (70), осемдесет (80), деветдесет (90).

3. The hundreds. сто (100), двеста (200), триста (300), четиристотин (400), петстотин (500), шестстотин (600), седемстотин (700), осемстотин (800), деветстотин (900). For thousands and millions, see large numbers.

4. Where и goes. Put и once, before the last word of the number:

  • двайсет и едно (21), сто и едно (101), сто и десет (110)
  • сто двайсет и пет (125), деветстотин деветдесет и девет (999)

5. One and two still agree. The last part changes like един and два/две: двайсет и една години (21 years), трийсет и две книги (32 books). Masculine nouns for things take the count form after any number: двайсет и пет стола (25 chairs).

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out и.

    Имам двайсет пет евро.
    Имам двайсет и пет евро.

    A compound number needs и before its last part.

  • Putting и in more than one place.

    В залата има сто и двайсет и пет места.
    В залата има сто двайсет и пет места.

    И appears only once, before the last word: сто двайсет и пет.

  • Forgetting that the last part agrees with the noun.

    Купих двайсет и два книги.
    Купих двайсет и две книги.

    Книга is feminine, so the last part is две, not два.
